In Sicily there are ancient trades that require precious and unique knowledge - know-how which is unfortunately, with the passing of time, at risk of being lost forever. You will discover just some of the most ancient Sicilian trades linked to the sea, which still today are being practised in the village of Ganzirri, near Messina, marked by the narrow alleyways typical of fishing villages.

Departing from Piazza Cutugno, you will first visit the artisan shop of Nassarolo, the creator of the nassa, an old piece of funnel-shaped fishing gear which uses lots of mesh which allows the fish to enter, attracted by the bait placed inside, but then makes it difficult for them to get back out. You will then discover Cocciularo, the shellfish farmer who cultivates native clams in Ganzirri's Lago Grande. To do this, still today many ancient techniques are employed. You will follow the little streets that wind around the village, immersing you in an unique atmosphere until you reach the shop of Mastro d'Ascia, a respected profession in the ancient shipyards when the boats were still mainly made of wood. They excel in shaping the wood, with a tool called an 'ascia', taking a stump of wood and shaping it into its final form.
